handcrafted objects and accessories
Dirt Road Modern was founded by Chris Brown, an architect living and working in rural Vermont. Chris has had a lifelong love of craft and design, cultivated at an early age working in his grandfather’s shop. Since receiving a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard, Chris has worked as an architect and designer on projects ranging in scale from small objects and furniture to large residential and commercial buildings. Throughout, Chris has been interested in exploring material properties and in the expressive potential of minimalist forms.
Dirt Road Modern brings select pieces from the studio to the market. The candle holders in this series explore the nature of cast concrete. The forms originate as finely crafted wood pieces. A rubber mold is then made from the wood and this serves as the form for poured concrete. The concrete is endlessly fascinating; raw, organic, tactile and refined at the same time. Each piece is unique.
Chris lives with his wife, three kids and dog in a house he designed and built in Vermont, surrounded by the natural world that inspires him.
